The comments on an Instagram post about cabbage leaves having the ability to relieve joint pain ranged from “This is completely true. Its more effective if you add mayonnaise with it,” to “Day 63 of wrapping cabbage on my chest to reduce pain inside my heart 😮‍💨😮‍💨still nothing happening”. Intrigued, indianexpress.com consulted a health expert to find out if there’s any truth to this claim.

According to holistic nutritionist Isha Lall, cabbages are rich in vitamins and phytonutrients, including antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds. “When you wrap cabbage leaves around your feet, these beneficial compounds are absorbed through the skin and help reduce swelling and pain. It’s a simple, natural remedy that our grandparents would also swear by,” she said.

How can you use this hack effectively?

“Choose fresh cabbage leaves, ensuring they are clean and undamaged. Slightly crush the leaves using a rolling pin, belan, or your hands to release their beneficial juices,” Lall said. “Place the crushed cabbage leaves around the painful areas of your feet or joints and secure them with a cloth or bandage.”

Lall suggested keeping the leaves on for about two hours or even overnight for better results. “You can repeat this process daily for four to five days or as needed,” she said.

Natural alternatives for joint pain

Turmeric: Known for its powerful anti-inflammatory properties, turmeric can be taken as a part of your regular diet.

Ginger: Another potent anti-inflammatory, ginger can be consumed fresh, as a tea

Epsom Salt Soak: Soaking in a warm bath with Epsom salts can help reduce pain and inflammation.

Essential Oils: Oils like eucalyptus, peppermint, and lavender can be massaged into the skin to relieve pain.

Exercise: Gentle exercises like yoga and swimming can help keep joints flexible and reduce pain.

Heat and Cold Therapy: Applying heat or cold packs to the affected areas can provide immediate relief from joint pain.

Lall, however, said that while these natural remedies can help, it’s important to consult a healthcare professional before trying new treatments, especially if you have underlying health conditions. She also recommended a holistic approach including a balanced diet, regular exercise, and stress management, to improve joint health.
