Who doesn’t enjoy quick meals at fast-food restaurants? While we’re focused on finding the best deal at these outlets, we may not realise that using the touch screen ordering machines can unknowingly contribute to breakouts and trigger acne.

Never thought about that, did you? indianexpress.com spoke to dermatologists to find out how this can be a leading concern for acne.

According to Dr Jyoti Gupta, dermatologist consultant, Dr Jyoti Gupta Clinic, New Delhi, said, “Public touchscreens, such as those in fast-food restaurants, can harbour a variety of bacteria, including Propionibacterium acnes (C. acnes), which contributes to acne. Touching these screens and then our faces can transfer these bacteria, potentially causing breakouts.”

Dr Charu Sharma, head of dermatology at Cureskin, said that this bacterial transfer can disrupt the balance of your skin’s microbiome, leading to inflammation and acne flare-ups, particularly if you’re already prone to acne.

How can such acne be prevented?

“People should regularly clean their mobile, laptop or computer touch screens with disinfecting wipes. They should also consider using styluses designed for touch screens to minimise direct contact,” said Dr Gupta.

Dr Charu suggested people should avoid touching their face unnecessarily throughout the day. This unconscious habit can unknowingly transfer bacteria from your hands to your skin.

“Wash your hands regularly, and your face twice a day, especially after coming home. This removes excess oil, dirt, and bacteria that can clog pores and contribute to breakouts and keeps your hands clean,” she said.

What causes acne?

“While bacteria like C. acnes play a role, excess oil production and clogged pores are key factors in acne development. Touchscreens can transfer oil from other users’ faces, contributing to more clogged pores,” Dr Gupta said.

“Certain medications, like corticosteroids, can trigger acne breakouts. Harsh scrubbing or using abrasive cleansers can irritate the skin and worsen acne,” she said.

Dr Charu said that excessive consumption of sugary and processed foods can worsen acne.

“Other leading causes could be hormonal fluctuations, which particularly starts during puberty and menstruation. Genetics also play a role in how susceptible someone is to acne breakout. Stress can also be a trigger for acne flare-ups,” she said.
