Mouni Roy has always had a svelte physique. But the actor admitted that she once put on 30 kg owing to an ailment — and this was right before she bagged the popular TV show, Naagin.

“I was sick once; about 7-8 years ago. I was on a lot of painkillers due to an L4-L5 slip disc degeneration. So I was completely bedridden. After that, I put on close to 30 kilos. I felt that my life was over. Nobody really saw me during that time,” Roy told Bollywood Bubble.

She further added it it was then that she understood the importance of limiting food intake. “When I stopped the medicines, half of the water weight went away. That’s also the time when I realised how unhealthy it is when you stop eating food. I used to do these cleanse juices for 4-5 days and used to be cranky. So, instead of eating a very large quantity of food, I ate a normal portion. Otherwise, I could eat for three people,” said Roy.

She mentioned, “I ate 6 meals throughout the day, and lost the weight with yoga and exercise. But food is the main thing,” said Roy.

On her favourite food, Roy shared, “I eat everything. I do believe in a balanced diet. My mum used to say that all nutrition should come from food. So, rice, and potatoes are good carbs. Dal is protein, egg is protein and saag is iron. So I try and have everything. But I take multivitamins. A hearty home-cooked meal is one thing I am always craving for.”

But what she does not enjoy is sugar. “I hate sugar. That’s not out of choice but I don’t like the taste of it. That’s such a blessing,” said Roy.

Notably, L4-L5 slip disc issue, or lumbar disc herniation, is seen when the intervertebral disc between the fourth and fifth lumbar vertebrae bulges out of its normal position. “This can lead to pressure on surrounding nerves inducing lower back pain, leg pain, and even numbness or weakness in the legs. Moreover, prolonged sitting and poor ergonomics can cause wear and tear on spinal structures, raising the risk of this condition that can interfere with one’s daily activities and impact the quality of life,” said Dr Anup Khatri, senior consultant- orthopaedics, Gleneagles Hospital, Parel, Mumbai.

But how does it lead to weight gain?

When the lumbar spine is compromised due to a herniated disc, people are in intense pain. According to Dr Khatri, this condition tends to impact one’s mobility and range of motion causing weight gain.

“Furthermore, dietary habits may shift towards eating comforting food that is usually high in calories. The unwanted stress owing to excruciating back pain can lead to hormonal changes that impact metabolism and one may gain oodles of weight. One must seek timely intervention in case of a slipped disc and maintain an optimum weight,” said Dr Khatri.

Pain medicine such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or naproxen will be recommended to people, said Dr Khatri. “After discontinuing the medication, to reduce water weight, one can do light exercises as recommended by the doctor, eat a well-balanced diet inclusive of protein, and avoid packaged foods high in sodium. Sleeping well, elevating feet, and wearing compression socks can be helpful,” said Dr Khatri.
