Diet plays a crucial role in achieving clear and healthy skin. Among the myriad of fruits suggested for a glowing complexion, apples often top the list. But are apples good for acne?

What’s so great about apples?

Fruits, especially “those rich in antioxidants like apples, berries, and strawberries, can contribute to healthier skin”, says Dr Priyanka Kuri, Consultant, Dermatology, Aster Whitefield Hospital, Bengaluru.

Antioxidants help combat inflammation, a factor in acne and premature ageing.” Vitamin C, abundant in many fruits, aids in collagen production and skin repair”. While these foods are beneficial overall, they aren’t a magic cure for acne. Individual responses to food vary, and some fruits, like mangoes, might trigger acne in certain people. For targeted skin concerns, consult a dermatologist.

You must eat at least “2-4 apples every day” to help treat forehead acne or acne on the cheeks, says Dr. Priyanka. Applying raw apple slices or apple paste regularly on the skin can offer a range of benefits.

All fruits are a great source of antioxidants, and as inflammatory acne is healed by antioxidants, “it helps prevent premature aging or early aging signs”. Food rich in vitmin C also help in dealing with pigmentation, leading to the ‘inner glow’.

Does a healthy gut lead to healthy skin?

Gut health significantly impacts skin health. Inflammation in the gut, often caused by an imbalance of bacteria, can contribute to skin issues like acne. Maintaining a healthy gut microbiome, rich in beneficial bacteria, can help reduce inflammation and improve skin clarity. Forehead acne is a common concern, especially among teenagers. Factors like dandruff, caused by excessive oil and dead skin cells on the scalp, and hair contact with the forehead can contribute to breakouts. Regular hair washing and trimming can help prevent this.
