It is well known that walking barefoot in the grass is very beneficial for your health, but we do not think much about whether we are barefoot or not inside the house. Turns out, that walking barefoot inside the house can be potentially very dangerous for you!

The most obvious danger of walking barefoot is obviously the risk of various physical injuries, including tripping over sharp objects like glass, nails, or toys, which can cause cuts, bruises, or serious wounds. Bare feet are also more susceptible to painful bruises or fractures from stubbing toes on furniture. Additionally, walking on slippery or wet surfaces without footwear raises the chances of slips and falls, potentially leading to sprains or more severe injuries.

Dr Sumol Ratna, Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine at Noida International Institute of Medical Sciences (NIIMS) College & Hospital tells indianexpress.com how walking barefoot inside the house can be dangerous not just because of the fear of physical injuries, but also hygienic issues.

“When it comes to hygiene, walking barefoot exposes your feet to bacteria, fungi, and other pathogens commonly found on floors everywhere. Dust, dirt, and allergens like pet dander or pollen can also cling to your bare feet, potentially causing or exacerbating allergies.” said Dr Ratna. According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, walking barefoot can heighten the risk of developing fungal infections such as athlete’s foot and plantar warts, which flourish in the warm, moist conditions commonly found on bathroom floors.

Cracks under your feet

Walking barefoot in your house can also cause skin cracks beneath your feet. “Your soles are more likely to get dry and cracked when you walk barefoot on uneven and hard surfaces. In being extremely unpleasant, cracked heels may raise your risk of infection if fungus or bacteria get inside through the openings in your feet.” said Dr Ratna.

To prevent cracks under the feet, it is important to wear shoes or slippers or protective socks. Further, washing your feet often as well as keeping them moisturized is also recommended.
