Research reveals all Indian salt and sugar brands have microplastics; know what it means for your health

A groundbreaking study conducted by Toxics Link, an environmental research organisation, has revealed the alarming presence of microplastics in every salt and sugar brand tested in India. The research examined 10 types of salt, including table, rock, sea, and local varieties, as well as five types of sugar purchased from both online and physical stores.

The findings were stark: microplastics were detected in all samples without exception. These tiny plastic particles varied in shape, including fibres, pellets, films, and fragments, with sizes ranging from 0.1 to 5 millimetres. Iodised salt emerged as the most contaminated, with 89.15 microplastic pieces per kilogram, while organic rock salt had the lowest levels at 6.70 pieces per kilogram.

Toxics Link founder-director Ravi Agarwal told PTI, “The objective of our study was to contribute to the existing scientific database on microplastics so that the global plastic treaty can address this issue in a concrete and focused manner.”

“We also aim to trigger policy action and attract researchers’ attention to potential technological interventions that could reduce exposure risks to microplastics,” he added.

What happens if you consume microplastics in the long-term?

Dr Narendra Singhla, Lead Consultant – Internal Medicine at the CK Birla Hospital, Delhi, explains how consuming these tiny plastic particles can affect health.

When microplastics enter the body, they can lead to a range of health issues. These particles are small enough to be ingested and can accumulate in the body over time, he explained. Here’s how they can impact your health:

Inflammation and Oxidative Stress: Microplastics can cause inflammation in the body’s tissues. When these particles are present in the body, they trigger an immune response, leading to inflammation and oxidative stress. Over time, this can damage cells and tissues, potentially leading to chronic conditions.

Immune System Suppression: Continuous exposure to microplastics can weaken the immune system. This makes the body more susceptible to infections and diseases, as the immune system is constantly dealing with the foreign particles.

Increased Risk of Chronic Diseases: Long-term exposure to microplastics has been linked to serious health conditions, including cancer, reproductive issues, and neurological disorders. These particles may interfere with hormone regulation, cellular processes, and even gene expression, leading to an elevated risk of chronic diseases.

Gastrointestinal Distress: Consuming microplastics can lead to gastrointestinal issues such as bloating, discomfort, and changes in bowel habits. These symptoms may occur as the body tries to process and eliminate the foreign particles.
