If your heart beats extra hard sometimes, this is what it could mean

A healthy heart maintains a steady rhythm, but what happens when your heartbeat becomes a rapid three-beat pattern? This unusual phenomenon, known as a galloping heart rhythm, can be a cause for concern, especially for older adults.

Dr Mukesh Goel, Senior Consultant, Cardio-Thoracic Surgery at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, explained that during a normal heartbeat, your heart produces two distinct sounds. However, a galloping rhythm disrupts this pattern, introducing an extra sound, and creating a “thump-thump-thump” sequence. This abnormal rhythm can affect people of all ages, but its significance varies, he said.

Age matters: When to  worry about a galloping heart

For younger individuals, a specific type of gallop might be considered normal and doesn’t necessarily require immediate action. However, Dr Goel emphasised that a galloping rhythm in older adults often indicates an underlying heart problem, particularly heart failure.

It can also manifest after a heart attack, in individuals with uncontrolled high blood pressure affecting the heart, or in those with weakened heart muscles due to various diseases.

Beyond the beat: Symptoms to watch out for

A galloping heart rhythm itself might not be the only indicator of a problem. Dr Goel highlights other symptoms to be aware of:

  • Shortness of breath, especially during physical activity
  • Unexplained fatigue or weakness
  • Swelling in the legs or ankles
  • Rapid or irregular heartbeats
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness

In severe cases, a galloping rhythm can signify a struggling heart, unable to meet the body’s demands. This can lead to complications like fluid buildup in the lungs, an increased risk of abnormal heart rhythms, and even a higher chance of sudden cardiac events.

Diagnosing the cause and finding solutions

If you experience a galloping heart rhythm or any of the associated symptoms, Dr Goel emphasises the importance of consulting a doctor. Further tests will be recommended to identify the root cause of the issue. Treatment then focuses on addressing the underlying heart condition. This may involve medications, lifestyle changes like diet and exercise modifications, or in some cases, more advanced heart therapies.

A galloping heart rhythm shouldn’t be ignored. By understanding the signs and symptoms, and seeking prompt medical attention, you can take control of your heart health and ensure a healthy, steady beat for years to come.
