Why Parvin Dabas has stopped consuming wheat

Remember Parvin Dabas, who starred in Khosla ka Ghosla!? The actor and filmmaker, who has maintained a low profile over the years, recently sat down with Rohit Bose Roy to talk about everything under the sun, including his diet. During the conversation, he spoke about consciously eliminating wheat from his diet. To this, his wife and former actor Preeti Jhangiani added: “As long as I have known Parvin, I have never seen him eat a roti”.

Opening up about his choice, Dabas added: “I have tried to take wheat out of my diet. I don’t think wheat is good or necessary for the body. But desi wheat like bajra, jowar, and ragi are good. Processed wheat was devised as a mass food because there were many people and so many stomachs. But it’s not needed. I think it does more harm than good. If you try removing wheat from your diet, you will see good improvements.

The 49-year-old shared that he eats rice. “Yes, we eat rice. If you look at most of the rice-eating countries, they are very healthy. Of course, it’s also how much you eat,” added Dabas.

Taking a cue, let’s understand what happens when one eliminates wheat from their diet.

Babina NM, chief medical officer, Jindal Naturecure Institute said that not eating gluten and refined carbohydrate food can potentially benefit gut health, depending on individual health needs in terms of maintaining fitness and avoiding unnecessary weight gain.

Some benefits include:

Reduced inflammation

High-carbohydrate diets, especially those rich in refined carbs like white flour (common in many rotis), can contribute to inflammation in the body, said Babina. “Chronic inflammation is linked to various gut issues such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and leaky gut syndrome,” she informed.

Improved gut flora

According to Babina, a diet lower in refined carbohydrates and higher in fibre-rich vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and probiotics can promote a healthier gut microbiome. “The microbiome plays a critical role in digestion, immune function, and overall health,” said Babina.

Blood sugar control

Refined carbs can spike blood sugar levels, which can lead to insulin resistance and other metabolic issues. “Maintaining stable blood sugar levels through a balanced diet helps in reducing stress on the gut and improving digestive health,” said Babina.

Considerations

Balance of Nutrients: Roti or similar meals need to be substituted by other nutrient-dense foods as completely cutting them out may result in a shortage of some nutrients, explained Babina.

“Make sure you are consuming enough whole grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes, and other alternative sources of fibre, vitamins, and minerals. To customise your diet to your unique requirements, it’s critical to keep an eye on how your body responds and speak with a healthcare provider or nutritionist,” said Babina.

Rather than eliminating roti, Babina recommended considering moderation and incorporating whole grain versions that provide more fibre and nutrients compared to refined versions. “Balance is key in maintaining overall health and supporting gut function,” said Babina.
