These fashion mistakes could break your maternity looks; stylists share what to avoid

Fashion for moms-to-be has been a tricky subject in India. While our mothers and grandmothers swore by loose maxis and nighties to cover their bumps, the newer generation is bold enough to turn pregnancy into a fashion statement.

From Hollywood A-listers to Bollywood celebrities, stars are flaunting their bumps and bringing their maternity A-game forward. But to err is to be human, and these faux pas may put a snag on their looks.

Indianexpress.com spoke to stylists and fashion designers to understand how expecting mothers can avoid common mistakes and put their best foot (bump?) forward.

“Nowadays, showing off the baby bump has become a trend. People are opting to show it off instead of hiding it. Take cues from Rihanna during her pregnancy days,” said Isha Bhansali, celebrity stylist.

Bhansali advised against wearing belts, noting that they not only put pressure on the tummy but also disrupt the visual flow by breaking the curve, adding clutter to the look. She recommended keeping the tummy area clean and neat, as this in itself will make a statement. While some women embrace heels, Bhansali advised sticking to block and sturdy heels and avoiding pencil heels at all costs.

Speaking about colour palettes, she advised against adding too many prints to your outfit. “Add just one print. Or else go solid,” Bhansali said.

Neha Saluja, design head of PinkFort, reflected on the time she was pregnant. Shes said, “Honestly, I was struggling to have good fashionable clothes. This could be a gap in the Indian market because we don’t have many brands offering fashion-forward maternity wear. But chunky jewellery helped. Nice shirt dresses, and elasticated skirts with nice tops or camis were my go-to.”

Saluja said tight jeans are a strict no-no. “When you gain volume in the belly, the skin becomes so sensitive that anything tight might give you rashes.” She also advised against using high heels, saying, “High heels should be avoided as you gain so much volume that the center of your body keeps shifting, making it easy to lose balance.”

Saluja suggested wearing loose clothing for comfort and easy movement, especially during the last few months of pregnancy. As a bonus tip, she recommended garments with pockets. “I would stock my snacks in my pockets as I felt hungry all the time,” she said.
