Veteran actror Farida Jalal, recently seen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, has graced our screens as the beloved “maa,” “dadi,” and “nani” for years. In a recent interview with Bollywood Bubble, she shared her experiences working with Bollywood’s biggest stars – Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, and Aamir Khan.

Farida, who has collaborated with Shah Rukh Khan in films like “Kuch Kuch Hota Hain” and “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham,” offered a unique perspective on the superstar. “Shah Rukh Khan is a stubborn person. Otherwise, he is extremely loving and caring. I don’t think he is someone who compromises very much, if he wants something, he will strive towards it till he has it. He is extremely ambitious. I knew he would someday become a big man, and today he is, I am so proud of him,” she said.

Farida went on to contrast Shah Rukh Khan’s personality with Salman Khan’s. “Salman Khan, on the other hand, is very laid-back,” she explained. He is very bindass. He is never like ‘I have to do this’, however, this thing was very much in Shah Rukh Khan. ‘I have to do this’.”

This laid-back nature presents a clear contrast to Shah Rukh Khan’s driven and ambitious personality.

Dr Gorav Gupta, Psychiatrist and Co-Founder of Emoneeds, explained that ambition is driven by a mix of genetic predispositions, environmental influences, and psychological factors. It originates from a desire for achievement, recognition, and personal fulfilment.

“Early experiences, parental encouragement, educational opportunities, and societal norms shape one’s ambition. For some, ambition is a response to challenges or adversity, acting as a mechanism to overcome obstacles and achieve goals,” he explained.

According to Dr Gupta, the variation in ambition among individuals can be attributed to different personality traits, such as motivation, resilience, and self-efficacy. “Some people are naturally inclined towards setting and pursuing high goals, often driven by intrinsic motivation and a strong sense of purpose. Others might prioritise contentment and balance, valuing a more laidback approach to life. These differences can also stem from varying life experiences, cultural backgrounds, and personal values,” he said in an interaction.

Ambition does not always equate to success, nor does a laidback attitude necessarily lead to failure. Success is subjective and multifaceted, encompassing career achievements, personal happiness, relationships, and overall well-being, he said. Ambitious individuals might achieve traditional markers of success but can also face burnout and dissatisfaction. Conversely, laidback individuals might find contentment and success in ways that are less conventional but equally fulfilling. Ultimately, a balanced approach, where ambition is tempered with well-being and personal satisfaction, often leads to the most sustainable and meaningful success.
