The Deol family is known for being true blue Punjabis, and their love for food. As such, when Bobby Deol sat down for an interview recently, he couldn’t help himself from sharing that there was a time when he drank 7-8 glasses of milk every day. “I used to drink a lot of milk — at least 7-8 glasses — every day. Now, I realise why I used to have digestive issues! (laughs),” he said.

Not only that, he revealed to Curly Tales that even he had a special glass to drink milk in. “I used to always look for the tallest glass so that I could get more milk. I had a special glass that was gifted to my father (Dharmendra). So, I used to say, this is my glass,” said the Animal actor, adding that now he drinks “may be one glass”.

Intrigued by the revelation, we decided to find out what happens to the body when one drinks 7-8 glasses of milk every day.

Neelima Bisht, chief clinical nutritionist, dietetics department, Paras Health, Gurugram said consuming 7-8 glasses of milk daily can have different effects on children and adults. “For children, milk is a valuable source of calcium, vitamin D, and protein, supporting bone growth and development. However, excessive intake can lead to weight gain and potential digestive issues like lactose intolerance,” said Bisht.

Notably, lactose is a sugar found in milk that is digested by an enzyme called lactase. “In most human populations, lactase activity decreases during mid-childhood (about five years of age), resulting in low levels from that age onward. This might cause lactose intolerance, and difficulty digesting lactose, which can cause bloating, gas, diarrhoea, and abdominal cramps. These symptoms can significantly impact daily life and overall well-being,” explained Dt Vaishali Verma, consultant- nutrition and dietetics, Manipal Hospital Dwarka.

Bisht cautioned that adults drinking so much milk may face “increased risks of heart disease due to high saturated fat content”. Verma elaborated that whole milk contains saturated fat, which affects our triglyceride levels and over time elevated triglyceride increases the risk of heart disease.

“Milk is a calorie-containing beverage. Proteins, sugars, fat and saturated fat in milk and dairy products may pose health risks such as obesity in children. Drinking too much milk can also lead to elevated blood sugar levels in diabetic patients,” said Verma.

Additionally, excessive calcium can hinder the absorption of other essential minerals, said Bisht.

Verma also mentioned that “most dairy cattle are injected with a cocktail of hormones which stimulates rapid growth of cattle and artificially speeds up milk production”. “One of these hormones, IGF-1, boosts the division and multiplication of all normal and abnormal cells, and has been linked to various cancers and acne,” said Verma.

What should be kept in mind?

Both children and adults should balance their diets to avoid nutrient imbalances. “Opt for low-fat or skim milk to reduce saturated fat intake, and consider lactose-free options if intolerance is an issue,” Bisht shared.

Consulting a healthcare professional can help tailor dietary needs to individual health conditions and nutritional requirements.
