Healthy doesn’t have to be bland; it can be bursting with flavours. The same was recently proven by mom-to-be Masaba Gupta who swears by all things healthy. “Public service announcement — ragi, jowar, and sweet potato paratha is yummier than basic aloo paratha,” the designer, who is extremely particular about her diet and fitness, wrote on Instagram Stories.

Gupta is expecting her first child with actor Satyadeep Mishra.

Taking a cue from the Masaba Masaba actor’s revelation, let’s understand what makes ragi-jowar-sweet potato a nourishing, yummy combination.

Dr Priyanka Suhag, consultant, dept of obstetrics and gynaecology at the CK Birla Hospital, Delhi shared that ragi-jowar-sweet potato paratha is a nutritious alternative to the traditional aloo paratha, making it an excellent choice for pregnant women. “This paratha is packed with essential nutrients: ragi (finger millet) is rich in calcium, iron, and dietary fibre, crucial for bone health and preventing anemia during pregnancy; jowar (sorghum) provides complex carbohydrates and protein, contributing to sustained energy levels, and sweet potato is an excellent source of beta-carotene, which the body converts to vitamin A, essential for fetal development,” said Dr Suhag.

Additionally, the lower glycemic index of this paratha helps manage blood sugar levels, reducing the risk of gestational diabetes, Dr Suhag added.

What more? The high fibre content in ragi and jowar promotes healthy digestion, preventing constipation, a common issue during pregnancy.

Moreover, sweet potato is rich in healthy antioxidants and vitamins that support overall health and immunity. “Incorporating ragi-jowar-sweet potato paratha into your diet can enhance nutrient intake, support digestive health, and maintain steady energy levels, making it a superior choice for pregnant women,” said Dr Suhag.

Experts like Susmita N, clinical nutritionist, Cloudnine Group of Hospitals, Bengaluru also suggest that adopting a diet that excludes raw foods can be a beneficial practice for pregnant women. “It’s essential to maintain a balanced diet by incorporating a variety of cooked vegetables, fruits, grains, and proteins to ensure adequate nutrient intake,” said Susmita.
