Binge eating is a disorder, especially if done regularly, making it essential to address the underlying causes. One potential remedy that has garnered attention is consuming a mixture of flaxseed powder, Himalayan pink salt, and lukewarm water. Health and wellness coach Dilshad Yaqubi said the combination can help provide relief after a night of binge eating as it reduces inflammation, and also tightens the skin and tones the body.

Does it work for everyone?

When these ingredients are combined, they create a “synergistic effect” that can address various aspects of post-binge eating discomfort, said Soumya Nadkarni, senior clinical dietitian at SPARSH Hospital, Bengaluru.

Digestive regulation: The soluble fibre in flaxseed powder forms a gel-like substance in the stomach, which helps regulate bowel movements and promotes a healthy gut microbiome. This can alleviate constipation and promote regularity, which is often disrupted after overeating.

Electrolyte balance and hydration: Himalayan pink salt helps replenish lost electrolytes and maintain the body’s fluid balance. This is particularly beneficial after consuming large quantities of food, which can lead to dehydration and an imbalance of electrolytes.

Soothing effect: Lukewarm water soothes the gastrointestinal tract, reduces bloating, and aids the digestion process. “It also helps dissolve the flaxseed powder more effectively, making it easier for the body to absorb the nutrients,” said Nadkarni.

This natural remedy harnesses the power of fibre, essential minerals, and hydration to combat the discomfort associated with overeating.

Edwina Raj, head of services – clinical nutrition and dietetics, Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore added that flaxseeds are a great source of both insoluble and soluble fibre with other beneficial nutrients such as omega 3, lignans, and antioxidants which are further studied to benefit in weight loss, constipation, reduce inflammation, heart disease, and potentially reduce the risk of cancer.

About 2 tbsp of flaxseed intake can provide around 8g of fibre, 135kcal, 6g of protein, 11g protein, and 3800mg of alpha-linolenic acid (omega 3). “Regular consumption of flaxseed has evidence in controlling your appetite due to the intake of fibre which binds water and forms a jelly-like consistency giving a feeling of fullness, cutting down on cravings,” said Edwina.

Things to note

However, Edwina pointed out that just consuming flaxseed is not the solution as there is no single food that can act as a magic pill for weight loss.

“A holistic approach of eating mindfully through varied sources of food groups with adequate intake of fluids, along with regular exercise and healthy lifestyle is the right approach for healthy weight loss. A diversified approach by including variety in your diet is the key rather than creating hype about one single food,” said Edwina.

While this remedy can be beneficial, it’s essential to consume it in moderation. “Excessive flaxseed intake can lead to digestive issues such as diarrhea or bloating. Additionally, those with specific health conditions, particularly related to the kidneys or thyroid, and pregnant women should consult with a healthcare provider before incorporating this remedy into their routine,” added Nadkarni.
