Why cold drinks don’t cool down your body as believed

Post At: Jul 13/2024 03:10PM

A summer heatwave hits and we all grab an ice-cold drink to cool down. But hold on Dr Charu Dua, Chief Clinical Nutritionist at Amrita Hospital explains why those might not be the best choice. She shares some refreshing alternatives to keep you feeling great.

Traditional Chinese Medicine uses the concept of “Spleen fire” to describe healthy digestion. Some believe cold drinks extinguish this fire, leading to digestive problems. However, Dr Dua clarifies that there’s no scientific evidence to support this concept.

While cold drinks might not directly extinguish your “Spleen fire,” Dr Dua highlights that they can slow down your digestive system. This is because your body works to maintain its core temperature, using energy to warm up the cold beverage. This extra work can temporarily slow down digestion.

Ditch the cold drinks

Sugary cold drinks are like empty sacks of sugar – they don’t really quench your thirst or give your body any goodness. Dr Dua says it’s better to choose drinks that keep you hydrated and are closer to your body temperature. Here are some great options:

  • Water: The classic choice for a reason! Water is essential for hydration and has no added sugars or calories.
  • Coconut Water (Nariyal Paani): A natural source of electrolytes, perfect for replenishing fluids lost through sweating.
  • Buttermilk (Chaas): A refreshing probiotic drink that aids digestion and keeps you cool.
  • Unsweetened Fruit Teas: Enjoy the taste of fruit with minimal sugar intake.

Warm drinks don’t cool you down either

Dr Dua advises against focusing on the temperature of your drink for cooling purposes. Our bodies regulate temperature regardless of what we consume. What truly matters is hydration.

So, when might a cold drink be okay?

Dr Dua advises moderation as key. According to the latest dietary guidelines, less than 5% of your daily calories should come from added sugar. If you can manage that occasional cold drink within your limits, it won’t cause major harm. However, Dr Dua strongly recommends prioritizing healthier options for everyday hydration.

While ditching the cold drinks is a good first step, there’s more you can do to stay cool in summer. Consider these tips:

  • Wear loose, breathable clothing.
  • Take cool showers or baths.
  • Avoid excessive sun exposure during peak heat hours.
  • Use cooling techniques like clay pots (matkas) for natural cold water.

By staying hydrated with healthy choices and implementing these cooling strategies, you can truly stay comfortable.

Cold drinks can be a refreshing addition to your summer routine, but to truly surpass the heat, a comprehensive approach is recommended. By learning about your body’s temperature regulation and applying these techniques, you can stay cool and comfortable even during the hottest days.
