For healthier, stronger, and more resilient hair, the solution might lie in an unexpected source — jaggery.

This unrefined sweetener, derived mostly from sugarcane, has long been cherished for its numerous health benefits in India for ages, but its potential for enhancing hair quality remains relatively unexplored.

In a reel posted on Instagram, nutritionist and dietician Adeeba Ikram Saiyad suggests, “Soak jaggery in water overnight, filter it out in the morning, and spray that water on your hair.”

Sadiya, dietician at CARE Hospitals Hitech City, Hyderabad said, “Jaggery, a traditional non-centrifugal cane sugar, is rich in nutrients and minerals like iron, magnesium, and potassium. These nutrients can contribute to overall health, which in turn supports hair health. Improved blood circulation, better oxygen delivery to hair follicles, and balanced nutrition can all contribute to stronger and more resilient hair.”

Beneficial nutrients and compounds

Dt Sadiya mentioned nutrients and compounds of jaggery water:

*Iron: Essential for proper blood circulation, iron helps deliver oxygen to hair follicles, promoting growth and strength.
*Magnesium: Plays a role in protein synthesis and energy production, which are crucial for hair health.
*Antioxidants: Jaggery contains antioxidants that can help combat oxidative stress, which can damage hair follicles and lead to hair loss.

Comparison to other natural remedies

Dr Monica Kapoor, celebrity cosmetologist and director of Flawless Cosmetic Clinic & ILACAD Institute explains, “Compared to other natural remedies or treatments for enhancing hair health, jaggery offers a holistic approach by providing a wide range of essential nutrients that are beneficial for hair growth and strength. While some natural remedies may focus on specific aspects of hair care, such as scalp health or hair conditioning, jaggery addresses multiple factors contributing to overall hair health, including nourishment, hydration and protection against damage.”

Jaggery water is a holistic remedy that provides internal nutrition, Sadiya said, adding that it is better to consume jaggery rather than spraying it on your hair as it can make it sticky.

She added that compared to other topical treatments like coconut oil or aloe vera, which directly nourish hair and scalp, jaggery can work from the inside out by improving overall health. While topical remedies can provide immediate benefits, jaggery contributes to long-term hair health by enhancing bodily functions and nutrient supply.

Sadiya mentioned that some individuals might have an allergic reaction to jaggery. Using jaggery water can be beneficial for hair health, but it should be used in moderation.
