We all push ourselves sometimes. Deadlines loom, workloads pile up, and social obligations beckon. But in the relentless pursuit of productivity, it’s easy to miss the subtle cues your body is sending – urgent messages that it desperately needs a break.

Dr Gorav Gupta, psychiatrist and co-founder of Emoneeds, helped us recognise the warning signs before they snowball into bigger issues.

Exhaustion beyond the ordinary

Persistent fatigue is a telltale sign your body is running on fumes. It’s not just tiredness that fades after a good night’s sleep – this fatigue lingers, impacting your energy levels throughout the day, said Dr Gupta.

You might find even simple tasks feel overwhelming, and the motivation to get things done dwindles.

Brain fog and concentration lapses

Is your mind feeling foggy? Are you struggling to focus on tasks that were once easy? Difficulty concentrating is another red flag. Important details slip through the cracks, and your memory might feel unreliable. This can significantly impact your work performance and overall productivity.

The headache cycle

Frequent headaches can be a physical manifestation of stress and exhaustion. These headaches might be tension headaches, characterized by a dull ache or pressure around the head, or they could be migraines, causing throbbing pain and sensitivity to light and sound.

Emotional rollercoaster

The stress of pushing yourself beyond your limits can also affect your emotional well-being. Irritability, mood swings, and a general feeling of being on edge are common signs. You might find yourself snapping at loved ones or feeling overwhelmed by minor inconveniences.

Listen to your gut (literally)

Stress doesn’t just affect your mind; it can wreak havoc on your digestive system too. Experiencing digestive issues like constipation, diarrhea, or stomach aches more frequently than usual can be a sign your body needs a break.

Increased illness

Chronic stress and exhaustion can weaken your immune system, making you more susceptible to illnesses like colds, flu, or infections. This creates a vicious cycle – you’re constantly battling illness, further depleting your energy reserves.

Sleepless nights and fragmented sleep

Does falling asleep feel like a battle? Are you waking up frequently during the night, or do you find yourself waking up tired even after a full night’s sleep? Insomnia and disrupted sleep patterns are significant warning signs that your body is struggling to cope.

Constant anxiety and feeling on edge

Stress can manifest as constant low-grade anxiety or even full-blown panic attacks. You might find yourself feeling constantly worried or on edge, even about minor things. These feelings can be debilitating and significantly impact your quality of life.

Heeding the call for rest

Ignoring these warning signs can lead to burnout, a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion. It can negatively impact your work performance, relationships, and overall well-being.

Dr Gupta emphasises the importance of listening to your body and taking a break before reaching this point.

Taking a break doesn’t have to mean a week-long vacation. Even small changes like prioritising sleep, delegating tasks, scheduling relaxation time, and engaging in activities you enjoy can make a big difference.
