Good health is a result of good habits. As such, some people believe that burping after meals indicates satiety. But that may not be the case if experts are to go by. While burps after meals are considered normal, burping too much can indicate underlying digestive issues. So, if you tend to burp a lot, here are some expert-approved measures to follow.

Frequent burping can be both uncomfortable and socially awkward. “It often stems from swallowed air, which accumulates in the stomach and is released through the esophagus. This is the gastric venting mechanism that prevents excessive abdominal distention by swallowed air. In simple words, burping occurs due to swallowing a large quantity of air which accumulates in the gastrointestinal tract,” said Dr Kapil Sharma, director, gastroenterology and head-endoscopy, Sarvodaya Hospital, Faridabad.

Here are some common reasons why this occurs:

Dietary habits: According to Dr Sharma, consuming carbonated beverages, eating too quickly, or mouth breathing can increase air intake. “Avoiding these habits can significantly reduce burping. Also, certain foods like beans, lentils, cabbage, and onions can cause gas buildup,” said Dr Sharma.

Medical conditions: Conditions like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), gastritis, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) can lead to excessive burping. If dietary changes don’t help, Dr Sharma said that it’s advisable to consult a healthcare provider for diagnosis and treatment.

Behavioural factors: Chewing gum, smoking, and anxiety can also contribute to excessive swallowing of air. Reducing these behaviours can help minimise burping.

Measures

Diet changes: Keep a food diary to track burping episodes and identify triggers. Eliminate or reduce intake of identified foods and beverages.

Eating habits: Eat smaller, more frequent meals and chew food thoroughly. Avoid talking while eating to minimise air intake.

Medical consultation: If burping persists, seek medical advice. Tests like endoscopy or pH monitoring may be necessary to diagnose underlying conditions, added Dr Sharma.

Implementing these strategies can help manage and reduce excessive burping, improving comfort and social interactions.
