Midnight snacking tends to disrupt the circadian rhythm of the body. This leads to an increase in the catabolic hormones in the body, said Riya Desai, senior dietitian, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road, Mumbai, adding that it can lead to adverse health outcomes in the long term. As such, instead of having sugar-heavy snacks or sodium-laden chips, opt for low-carb, low-sugar, and salt alternatives. Wondering what falls under that category? Keep scrolling!

According to nutritionist Sonia Narang, it is ajwain paratha with some ghee and julienned ginger. It is good for digestion, prevents insulin spikes, and helps the stomach, she shared.

“Salt has purposely been avoided. Just make a small one at dinnertime and keep it in the casserole. You’d be at peace that there’s good food in the kitty in case you need it,” said Narang, adding that the leftover paratha can also be had the following day.

“Curd, fruits, nuts are other options – you need to check what really suits you and calms you down enough to sleep better and is light enough to make you wake up with energy,” added Narang.

Shruti K Bhardwaj, chief dietician at Zydus Hospital, Ahmedabad shared that ajwain paratha with ghee and julienned ginger can be an effective option to curb midnight cravings, particularly for those who seek both taste and potential health benefits. “Ajwain (carom seeds) are known for their digestive properties, which can help alleviate indigestion and bloating that sometimes accompany late-night snacking. The distinct flavour of ajwain also adds a satisfying taste to the paratha, making it a fulfilling option,” said Bhardwaj.

Ghee, or clarified butter, adds richness and enhances the flavour of the paratha. “It is a source of healthy fats that can provide a sense of satiety, helping to reduce further cravings. Additionally, ghee contains butyrate, which is known to support gut health and may help with digestion,” shared Bhardwaj.

According to Bhardwaj, julienned ginger adds a spicy kick and is known for its numerous health benefits, including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. “Ginger can help soothe the stomach, improve digestion, and boost metabolism, making it a good addition to your midnight snack,” shared Bhardwaj.

While ajwain paratha with ghee and ginger offers these benefits, it’s important to consider portion sizes and overall dietary balance. “Overeating, even healthy foods, late at night can lead to disrupted sleep and potential weight gain. Therefore, a moderate portion of this combination can be both satisfying and beneficial, curbing midnight cravings effectively,” said Bhardwaj.
