“Cilantro and chlorella are both known for their nutritional benefits and potential health advantages as they are rich in vitamins A, B12, C, E and K, and antioxidants. When consumed together, she explained that cilantro and chlorella can enhance each other’s detoxifying effects, particularly in removing heavy metals and other toxins from the body.

“The known benefits of cilantro include it being an antioxidant, promoting digestion, reducing swelling and potentially lowering blood sugar levels. Chlorella is a nutrient dense algae that strengthens the immune system, enhances detoxification and contains vital vitamins and minerals,” said Veena V, Dietician, Aster Whitefield Hospital, Bangalore.

Cilantro binds metals which helps in their mobilization while chlorella absorbs them making this combination ideal for detoxification purposes, she added.

How often should you drink this?

“It would be beneficial to start this routine 1-2 times a week and increase it in moderation based on the individual’s tolerance level. It would be best not to exceed consuming this concoction for more than a month or two,” said Joseph.

Veena said that the  best time to take a glass of this detoxifying agents made up of coriander and chlorophyll is early morning before eating anything else. This way maximum absorption is ensured because it begins purging out toxins in the human system from the start of the day hence throughout the rest of the day.

Is it safe for consumption by all?

“You should start taking this drink only after consulting a nutritionist and getting your blood work done, since those with compromised kidneys can be affected resulting in renal dysfunction,” said Joseph.

Those who take Warfarin (blood thinner) tablets should avoid taking this concoction as it hampers the functioning of warfarin in the body, she added.

According to her, a person may experience digestive issues, allergic reactions and detox symptoms. It also needs to be understood that based on the age group the effects of the concoction would be different.

“While generally safe, cilantro has its fair share of allergies as some people are allergic to iodine (which can be found in chlorella) whereas others may have auto-immune disorders. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should also consult a doctor first before consumption,” shared Veena.
