Planning a candlelight dinner for your beau? Or simply want a quiet night in, curling up with a good book and lounging in the cosy warmth of scented candles? You might be unknowingly dooming yourself. These fragrant candles release toxins that threaten to disrupt your health in more ways than you can imagine. Let’s find out how.

“Scented candles are known to release particles into the air that are inhaled by us, specifically indoors. According to studies conducted, lighting scented candles can disrupt hormones due to the presence of phthalates present in fragrances used in candle manufacturing,” shared Dr Srinivas Kandula, Consultant endocrinologist, CARE Hospitals, Banjara Hills.

“These phthalate chemicals are incorporated into candles for long-lasting fragrance and for increased flexibility of plastic. Phthalate is known to disrupt hormones, which may lead to severe consequences such as decreased fertility and cancer,” he said.

Scented candles also contain chemical derivatives such as paraffin, parabens and other synthetic components which may impact the hormones, Dr Kandula added.

What precautions can be taken ?

Dr Kandula suggested opting for a well-ventilated space when lighting candles. “When candles are used indoors or a closed space, we are more prone to inhaling toxins present in them,” he said.

By limiting the frequency of use, the crisis can be averted. He advised against lighting scented candles every day.

Dr Kandula recommended choosing natural fragrances over candles that contain synthetic fragrances.

“Do not leave the candle burning for a prolonged time or overnight, and keep it out of reach from children and flammable objects in the house. Always trim the wick before lighting the candle. It can help prevent soot production, aka the black residue that lingers in the air,” he pointed out.

Are there any safer non-toxic alternatives?

Dr Kandula considers it important to choose non-toxic alternatives that do not harm your health.

“One can opt for candles made out of beeswax. Another option for non-toxic candles can be made from soy wax. Recently coconut wax candles have also grown in popularity. These pose relatively fewer health risks when compared to candles made with chemicals,” he said.

In terms of fragrances, he recommended using natural essential oils. Also, looking out for materials included in the candle can help reduce risks of allergic reaction.

“You can light candles 2 or 3 times per week. In a month it is not suggested to light scented candles more than 12 times,” said the doctor.

According to him, factors such as the duration of the candle burning, materials used in the candle, type of space used to burn the candle play an important role in deciding the health risk factor.

“If the household has sensitive individuals with asthma, young children or pets it is important to be cautious and to not frequently use candles,” he said.
