Picture seeing pebbled strawberry skin all over the expanse of your arms and legs, a while after a waxing session! Summer calls for short skirts and sundresses, sleeveless and tube tops, but bumpy skin can ruin those plans and your beach vacation.

Arm basting is the latest trick on TikTok that promises smooth skin devoid of keratosis pilaris (KP). Digital creator and dermatologist Mark Strom shared the concept to address this skin concern plaguing people and adding to their insecurities.

What is keratosis pilaris?

“It is a common skin condition that leads to development of rough, bumpy areas on the skin, usually on the upper arms, thighs, cheeks, and buttocks. Body basting can prove to be helpful in curtailing it,” said Dr Swapna Priya, consultant dermatologist, CARE Hospitals Hitech City, Hyderabad.

“Keratin, a skin-protecting protein, accumulates and creates hard plugs inside hair follicles, causing KP. It can look unappealing and can cause discomfort as it can feel scratchy or dry”, she said.

How does arm basting help?

“Also called ‘body basting,’ arm basting is a technique where oils or moisturizing agents are applied to the skin, which is then wrapped or covered for a while to enhance hydration and absorption,” said Priya.

Dry skin exacerbates KP, so emollients and humectants are used to deeply hydrate the skin. This method helps smooth the skin’s texture and soften keratin plugs by trapping in moisture, she said. Covering the skin creates a warm, occlusive environment that aids absorption of the ingredients.

According to her, chemical treatments like beta-hydroxy or alpha-hydroxy acids, which encourage mild exfoliation, are also used to treat KP. They reduce the bumpy appearance by removing keratin buildup and unclogging pores.

Priya suggested avoiding over-exfoliation or picking at the bumps caused by “chicken skin,” as it can lead to inflammation or scarring. Using a rough loofah or brush on the affected area can also worsen the skin condition.
