Summer is here, the king of fruits is back. Before you grab a bowl and tuck in, learn why you should rinse your mangoes, and in fact, all fruits and vegetables, and when is the right time to eat them.

“The outer skin of fruits and vegetables may gather pesticides and dust. Always wash them before consuming. Since mangoes are perishable, bacteria may grow on them. Before cutting mangoes and peeling the skin, put it in water for five minutes,” said N Vijayshree, head and chief dietician, MGM Healthcare.

Mangoes are often sweet and attract bees and insects. Hence, rinsing them becomes imperative. “There is no need to soak your mangoes for hours on end. The peel is thick and it doesn’t soften, contrary to popular belief. Rinsing them for a couple of minutes does the job,” she said.

Since mangoes have a high glycemic index which results in quick and increased blood sugar levels, Vijayshree warned diabetic people against consuming them.

“In India, people are used to having mangoes as dessert. Try not to have mangoes right after a heavy meal. The best time to have mangoes is on an empty stomach to reduce the spike in sugar levels, so wait a couple of hours after the meal” she said.

Nutritionists recommend the ideal serving to be 100 grams of mangoes. According to her, one katori (bowl) of mangoes is just the right amount.
