Alia Bhatt recently made a splash on the international stage, channelling an Indian princess in a stunning Sabyasachi sari at the Met Gala. However, in a more personal interview with Harper’s Bazaar, the actor shed light on a different kind of red carpet – one of marriage.

Alia revealed that she and her husband Ranbir Kapoor have contrasting approaches to dealing with challenges. While she describes herself as more contemplative and prone to overthinking, Ranbir possesses a knack for letting go and moving forward.

Alia said, “Ranbir and I handle things differently. I am more contemplative, a bit of an overthinker, while he prefers to shake off the dust and move on quickly. It’s this difference that helps us support each other, providing balance when it’s needed the most.”

But is overthinking always a bad thing? According to Dr Neerja Agarwal, Psychologist and Co-founder of Emoneeds, no.

“While overthinking can sometimes lead to excessive worry, stress, and indecision, it is not always inherently negative. In certain situations, such as when making an important decision or problem-solving, a certain degree of reflection and analysis can be beneficial,” she explained in an interaction with indianexpress.com.

Overthinking, however, does become problematic when it starts interfering with your daily functioning. Dr Agarwal warned that then it can lead to negative outcomes such as increased anxiety and decreased productivity.

Why are some of us overthinkers?

Overthinking can be attributed to a combination of genetic, environmental, and psychological factors, Dr Agarwal explained. “Some individuals may have a predisposition to overthinking due to their genetic makeup, while others may develop this tendency as a result of learned behaviors or environmental stressors.

Personality traits such as neuroticism and perfectionism are also associated with overthinking. Dr Agarwal added that experiences such as trauma or a history of anxiety can contribute to the development of overthinking tendencies.

How can you stop or control overthinking?

According to Dr Agarwal, there are several strategies that can help individuals stop or control overthinking:

– Mindfulness and meditation: Practicing mindfulness techniques can help individuals become more aware of their thoughts and feelings, allowing them to observe their thoughts without judgment and let go of negative thought patterns.

– Challenge negative thoughts: Learning to recognize and challenge negative thought patterns can help individuals gain perspective and reduce overthinking. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) techniques, such as cognitive restructuring, can be particularly helpful in this regard.

– Set time limits for decision-making: Setting specific time limits for making decisions can help prevent overthinking. Giving oneself a deadline can help limit the amount of time spent analyzing a situation and facilitate more efficient decision-making.

– Engage in enjoyable activities: Engaging in enjoyable and relaxing activities can help distract the mind from overthinking and reduce stress. Activities such as exercise, hobbies, and spending time with loved ones can help individuals shift their focus away from negative thoughts.
