Actor Imran Khan, last seen in the film Katti Batti alongside Kangana Ranaut, has now revealed the reasons behind his separation from his childhood love and ex-wife, Avantika Malik. The couple parted ways in 2019.

Imran shared that his battle with depression made him realise the relationship was not working. He told India Today in an interview, “Without going too much into that part, because I’m hesitant to add a lot of fuel to the gossip fire, but as I was dealing with all of this baggage and my internal struggle, I did find that my marriage and my relationship were not helping any of that.”

He further explained, “In an ideal, healthy dynamic between two people, you are both making each other better, healthier, stronger, and supporting each other to be the healthiest, best, strongest version. We were not in that place.”

Khan’s comments highlight a crucial aspect of coupledom. Just as a positive outlook strengthens a bond, mental health issues can cast a long shadow.

The domino effect of depression

Dr Parth Nagda, a consultant psychiatrist at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Navi Mumbai, explains mental health is a cornerstone of a successful marriage and how depression can cause many problems within a couple:

Communication crumbles: Depression’s symptoms like sadness, overthinking, and irritability make open communication difficult. Sharing fears and hopes becomes a struggle, leading to arguments and misunderstandings.

Intimacy fades: Depression and anxiety can dampen emotional and physical connection, a vital part of any marriage.

Burden on the Partner: While initially, a supportive partner can be a source of comfort, prolonged mental health struggles can lead to exhaustion and resentment.

Life loses its lustre: Depression can zap energy and motivation, leading to a decline in shared activities like family outings or movie nights.

These challenges needn’t be a marriage ender, said Dr Nagda. Open and non-judgmental communication is key. Seeking professional help from a psychiatrist for anxiety or depression can be a lifesaver.

When the tables turn

Being with someone struggling with mental health can also take a toll on the partner, Dr Nagda explained:

Emotional toll: The constant emotional strain can leave you feeling anxious, burnt out, and helpless.

Exhaustion and stress: You might become overly protective, taking on extra care to avoid upsetting your partner. This can lead to exhaustion and neglecting your own needs.

Mental health risks: Dealing with your partner’s struggles can put your own mental health at risk, making you susceptible to stress, anxiety, and even depression.

Social isolation: The stigma surrounding mental health might prevent you from seeking support from friends and family, leading to isolation.

Don’t let these issues fester. Seeking professional help from a psychiatrist at the earliest can prevent them from snowballing into bigger problems. Remember, a healthy partnership requires both partners to be mentally well.
