Experts agree that banana, known for their hydrating and moisturising properties, makes it the best choice for shiny hair. “They are rich in vitamins like A, C, and B and minerals like potassium, magnesium, and antioxidants which not only strengthen your hair but also promote a healthy scalp,” said Dr Rinky Kapoor, consultant dermatologist, cosmetic dermatologist and dermato-surgeon, The Esthetic Clinics.

Potassium helps improve blood circulation and deliver essential nutrients to the hair follicles, added dietitian Simrat Bhui. “This promotes healthy hair growth and might even help prevent hair loss,” said Bhui.

Not only in the diet, people often apply bananas — mostly as a hair mask. “These hair masks can be modified and adjusted according to individual preferences and available ingredients,” said Dr Kapoor.

Here are some effective DIY banana hair masks with simple ingredients to promote your hair growth:

Banana and avocado hair mask

Avocado is packed with biotin, vitamins, and healthy fats that can soften the strands, making them smooth and silky. “This hair mask can be made by mashing ripe banana and avocado in the same quantity and applying it on the scalp and your split ends for the best results. Let it rest for 20 to 30 minutes and rinse it off with warm water. Individuals are advised to apply it once or twice a month for luscious hair,” shared Dr Kapoor.

Banana and coconut oil hair mask

Coconut oil is considered one of the best choices for healthy hair. When combined with banana, which is known for improving the overall texture of your hair, it works wonders. “Mix one ripe banana with 2 tablespoons of coconut oil and apply it to your hair. Let it sit for almost 30 to 40 minutes. This can make your hair hydrated and less frizzy,” said Dr Kapoor.

Although banana is a rewarding ingredient with various benefits for hair and gives a natural shine and even moisturises the hair, people should use it moderately without going overboard. “People are advised to properly wash their hair after applying a hair mask, as a leftover banana hair mask can cause irritation and worsen your dandruff. Over usage of these hair masks can make your ends brittle resulting in split ends and hair damage. Consult experts or doctors in case of any allergies or concerns to avoid any future side effects and hair damage,” urged Dr Kapoor.
