Myth vs fact: Can eating soya really reduce testosterone?

In the world of nutrition, myths often swirl like a tempest, leaving us questioning what’s true and what’s simply a gust of hot air. One such enigma dances around the soya, whispering tales of its supposed deprived powers over the male hormone, testosterone.

Shivani Bajwa, a functional medicine and health expert, said that the relationship between soy consumption and testosterone levels in boys is a topic of debate among researchers. Soya contains compounds called phytoestrogens, which are plant-derived substances that mimic the hormone estrogen in the body.

Some studies suggest that phytoestrogens could potentially influence hormone levels, including testosterone, in males, Ms Bajwa added.

Scientific evidence

Bajwa stated that the current scientific evidence does not consistently support the idea that consuming soya significantly reduces testosterone levels in boys. Several studies have examined the effects of soya consumption on hormone levels in males, including boys going through puberty, and have found mixed results. While some studies suggest a slight decrease in testosterone levels with high soya intake, others have found no significant impact.

Moreover, the effects of soya consumption on hormone levels may vary depending on factors such as the amount of soya consumed, individual metabolism, and overall diet and lifestyle. Additionally, many of the studies indicating potential hormonal effects of soya have been conducted using isolated soya compounds or high doses not typically consumed in a regular diet, added Bajwa.

Overall, moderate consumption of whole soya foods as part of a balanced diet is generally considered safe for boys and does not appear to have a significant negative impact on testosterone levels, said Ms Bajwa.

In fact, soya foods like tofu, tempeh, and soya milk can be nutritious sources of protein, vitamins, and minerals. However, as with any dietary component, it’s essential to consume soya in moderation and as part of a varied diet to ensure overall nutritional balance and to monitor individual responses, explained Bajwa.

Bajwa recommended if there are concerns about soya consumption and testosterone levels, consulting with a healthcare provider or registered dietitian is recommended for personalized guidance.
