Janhvi Kapoor, who is busy promoting her upcoming sports drama Mr and Mrs Mahi, recently opened up in detail about the shoulder injuries she experienced during the shoot of the film. “I was playing 300-400 balls (in cricket) twice a day for two hours each. But the doctor had put a cap of 60-70 balls. Before every shoot, I was taped using bungee-tape, which is very harsh. There were 12 tapes on each side, put in a way so that the shoulder didn’t pop out from its socket. Every time, they ripped the tape off my shoulders, it would draw blood. Chamdi nikal jaati thi (my skin would come out),” said Kapoor, in an interaction with Siddhaarth Aalambayan for Mashable India.

“I had to shoot with those tapes every day for 12-13 hours. Oh God! I can’t tell you the pain. It was real bad,” recounted Kapoor.

As such, let’s understand more about the process of taping, and how it works.

Dr Anup Khatri, senior consultant, orthopedics, Gleneagles Hospital, Parel, Mumbai said that when it comes to the shoulders, bungee tape, technically called kinesiology tape, is used by athletes to correct their posture. “Kinesiology tape will also allow for stabilising and supporting the shoulder joints and maintaining correct alignment while undertaking any physical activities. Taping reduces muscle spasms and helps with quick healing from an injury,” said Dr Khatri.

He added that taping also reduces the chances of shoulder injuries. “The aim is to provide stability to the shoulder to increase the range of motion and reduce pain. Moreover, the tape is beneficial for people who sit or do forward-bending movements often,” Dr Khatri continued.

The expert mentioned that such taping won’t cause any problems while moving the shoulder. “Taping also tends to lower pressure on the muscles to move without any difficulty,” said Dr Khatri.

Things to note

*Go for taping only if the doctor has advised you.
*Ensure to get taped under the guidance of the doctor for optimum results.
*Understand the underlying cause behind bungee taping. “Don’t do it just because you saw people opting for it on social media. There’s more to it. This technique is known to help with circulation and joint irritation,” said Dr Khatri.
