Like to sleep on your stomach? Here are 3 posture mistakes you must avoid

In the hustle and bustle of daily life, we often neglect one of the most fundamental aspects of our well-being — posture. The way we sit, stand, and move can have a profound impact on our health and overall quality of life. Unfortunately, many of us make common posture mistakes without even realising it.

Recently, mindful movement practitioner and Pilates trainer Namrata Purohit shared three posture mistakes we must avoid at all costs. “They are harmful to one’s posture and can cause random aches and pains in the body,” she captioned the post.

1) Keeping one leg over the other

According to Utsav Agrawal, advanced fitness trainer, FITTR, crossing one leg over the other while sitting can lead to uneven pressure on the pelvic bones. “This imbalance can cause the pelvis to tilt or rotate, affecting the alignment of the spine.”

Additionally, prolonged sitting in this position may result in discomfort or pain, especially in the lower back, hips, and pelvis. It may also contribute to issues like sciatica or exacerbate existing conditions, Agrawal said.

2) Sleeping on your stomach

When you sleep on your stomach, Agrawal noted that it involves turning your head to one side to breathe. “This can result in prolonged rotation of the neck, potentially leading to strain and discomfort.”

This may also cause the lower back to arch excessively, thereby creating strain on the lumbar spine and the supporting muscles. Apart from this, Agrawal said this position may restrict natural breathing patterns and put additional pressure on the chest and lungs, potentially impacting respiratory function.

3) Twisting or cracking your neck

While occasional joint cracking may not necessarily be harmful, Agrawal explained that forcefully twisting or cracking your neck can potentially cause injury. “Professional guidance is recommended for neck adjustments to ensure proper technique and to avoid the risk of damaging the delicate structures in the cervical spine.”

It’s crucial to remember that individual factors such as pre-existing conditions, injuries, or other health concerns can influence the impact of these activities. If someone has specific issues or discomfort related to these habits, they should consult a healthcare professional or a qualified fitness and rehabilitation expert for personalised advice and guidance.
