My transition is complete, says Trinetra embracing gender affirmation and confidence

Made in Heaven actor Trinetra Haldar Gummaraju took to Instagram to share her story of undergoing facial feminisation surgery, throwing light on her thoughts and feelings behind taking this transitioning step.

“My transition is complete. I didn’t think this final step would happen anytime soon, but it has. I did this by myself, for myself, and still can’t believe it. Transition to me is deeply spiritual, and not the stuff of tabloids and speculative nonsense,” the doctor shared about her fear of public judgment and fear of scrutiny while choosing what to do with her body.

The Instagram post featured a melee of psychedelic floral prints covering the expanse of the background along with a cut out of her post-operative face and the text “recovery sucks balls” written on top.

What’s Facial Feminisation Surgery?

Facial Feminisation Surgery (FFS) includes softening male features to give an outwardly feminine appearance to the face.

“Males generally tend to have a squarish jaw while the female face is oval or heart-shaped, said Dr Debraj Shome, senior cosmetic surgeon and director, The Esthetic Clinics.

He described a typical manly face as having a well-defined thyroid cartilage, popularly known as the Adam’s apple. Besides prominent facial hair, they also have small intense eyes and low-slung brows.

Certain gender characteristics are specific to a male face owing to the hormone testosterone, which may be completely different from how a female face looks, because of softer hormones like estrogen and progesterone, he added.

Are there health risks involved?

The FFS can include multiple surgeries such as rhinoplasty or blepharoplasty (eyelid reconstruction), that can done even for normal people, said Dr Shome.

“No cosmetic surgery is without risk. But it’s not like it’s a specific surgery only for those who are looking to transition from one gender to another. It could be done even on people who want to look younger and more rejuvenated. This surgery isn’t any more risky for a cis-het person person than a trans person.”

The Rainbow Rishta star further added, “I’ve lost count of how many people in the industry I’ve met who’ve had work done and will deny intervention. To each their own, but I do not wish to contribute to a culture of opacity that thrives on making masses of young people insecure.”

She refused any interest in promoting bodily intervention, claiming transparency, especially as a doctor.

“My reasons were gender affirmation and confidence therefrom, as extensively deliberated on over years of therapy,” she concluded in her post.
