Bollywood actor and BJP candidate from the Mandi Lok Sabha seat in Himachal Pradesh Kangana Ranaut is busy campaigning. While at it, she is also showcasing her deep connection to her roots by wearing a range of traditional Himachali outfits — from a Kinnauri ensemble to the Chamba Gaddi dress.

Though all regions of Himachal may have their own traditional outfits, designer Anju Modi pointed out the connecting thread between them — the colours. “Because they live in regions with much less colour, their motive through their outfits, including the Himachali cap, is to emote the colours they don’t see in the world around them.”

Kangana’s latest Kinnauri attire, which highlighting a blend of practicality and beauty essential for the Himalayan climate, garnered significant praise.

Kinnauri women’s attire typically includes a long-sleeved woolen blouse paired with a woolen skirt known as a “suthan.” A vibrant woolen shawl called a “dohru,” completes the ensemble, often adorned with embroidered borders and secured with silver brooches known as “boomini.” Headwear, such as a square cloth called a “dhatu” or “thipu,” and traditional hemp footwear with colourful thread decorations, complete the look.

During her visit to Chamba, Ranaut paid homage at the Laxmi Narayan Temple, renowned for its 84 temples, including one dedicated to Yamraj, the god of death. Embracing the local culture, she wore the traditional Chamba attire known as Luanchari, consisting of a blouse and a long skirt embellished with silver ornaments.

In a social media post, the Fashion actor expressed her admiration for Chamba’s beauty, culture, and people, expressing a desire for continued connection with the town.

In Kullu, Ranaut donned various Himachali caps and local Kullvi ‘Pattu.’ Pattu, crafted from sheep wool, is a staple attire for women in the hilly regions of Kullu, Mandi, and Kinnaur during the winter months. Worn over a suit or sari to combat the cold, Pattu is revered as both art and tradition by the locals. Historically, it was handwoven on wooden handloom machines known as ‘Khaddi,’ reflecting the region’s rich heritage and craftsmanship.

Each district or sub-region within Himachal Pradesh often has its distinct style of cap, showcasing the diversity within the state. For example, the caps worn in Kullu, Kinnaur, Chamba, and other areas may differ in design, colour, and embroidery patterns, allowing individuals to identify the wearer’s place of origin.
