Celebrity hairstylist Yianni Tsapatori on working with Deepika Padukone: ‘We have a professional rapport that feels more like…’

What was meant to be a month-long stint is still going strong — even after seven years — and extremely successfully for Yianni Tsapatori, who is the man behind many memorable celebrity hairstyles. From Deepika Padukone and Anushka Sharma to Katrina Kaif and Kareena Kapoor Khan, the hair wizard has worked his magic on many stars and created some noteworthy looks over the years. But ask him who he thinks has the best hair in Bollywood, and he gives the title to Janhvi Kapoor. Probing further, we asked the celebrity hairstylist about what “healthy hair” means to him, the secret to lustrous tresses, and so much more, including the one thing the Piku actor swears by for her locks — and he answered them all.

After studying engineering, when and how did your journey as a hairstylist begin? What brought you to India in 2016?

Yianni Tsapatori: Growing up in a salon gave me a glimpse into the industry, but my journey as a hairstylist truly began when I decided to pursue it professionally. I chose to specialize as a session hairstylist, working on sets and photoshoots with celebrities. For me, the ultimate satisfaction is seeing someone leave my chair with a smile — whether a celebrity or an everyday individual — as their happiness is a testament to my success over time.

As for my journey, it wasn’t a conscious decision but rather life leading me down this path. After living in New York for years, I felt the urge for a break and a desire to explore the world. That’s when a photographer introduced me to India. Intrigued by the prospect of new opportunities and appreciation for my work, I decided to give it a shot. What was initially meant to be a month-long stint turned into seven years, and I’ve been here ever since.

Who would you say has the best hair in Bollywood? And what do your criteria look like?

Tsapatori: In my opinion, Janhvi Kapoor stands out for having the best hair. To me, good hair means healthy hair.

Do you ever feel restricted when working with stars — whether in movies (since you have a character to stick to) or for events? 

Tsapatori: When it comes to working for a movie, understanding the character is key for me. I delve into who she is, her background, and even her financial situation. Take ‘Gehraiyaan,’ for example. The character I styled was a struggling yoga instructor living in Mumbai, so I kept her look natural and undone, reflecting her modest lifestyle. Even small details like the placement of hair colour and styling techniques were carefully considered to align with her character’s journey. There’s always a thoughtful process behind the looks I create.

The secret to good hair is…

Tsapatori: Firstly, prioritise hydration. Second, a balanced diet rich in protein, whether from vegetarian or non-vegetarian sources. Third, minimize heat usage and always protect your hair. Consider investing in tools for optimal care. Fourth, use the right hair products, including a shampoo and conditioner that suits your hair type. And lastly, experiment with hairstyles and find what works best for you. Don’t hesitate to take inspiration from celebrities, but always tailor it to your preferences and needs.

Favourite hairstyling trend?

Tsapatori: My favourite hairstyling trend right now is textured hair. I love that people are more open to rough textures, which aligns closely with my style. Anything that reflects a natural, undone texture is what I find most appealing.

How is it working with Deepika Padukone?

Tsapatori: Working with Deepika is great. We have a professional rapport that feels more like a professional friendship. We’re aligned aesthetically, especially when it comes to our work, which makes the collaboration seamless. She understands my vision and is always open to trying new ideas once I explain the story behind the look we’re aiming for.

Deepika Padukone is known for her gorgeous hair. What are some hair care hacks that she swears by?

Tsapatori: One thing Deepika does, which I find incredible and fully agree with, is brushing her hair and scalp. It’s a simple yet effective practice because a healthy scalp means healthy hair.

Tell us about the latest look-book of Dyson with Deepika Padukone. Which look do you personally like?

Tsapatori: I’m pleased with what we created. We tried experimenting with textures to showcase the versatility of the Dyson AirwrapTM multi-styler. With just one tool, we were able to create four different looks. I particularly liked the beachy waves as it plays with the hair texture and is closer to my style.
