It needs no retelling that what we eat has a massive impact on our overall health. As such, we must take care of what we put on our plates, how much we put in, and what time we eat our meals. But did you know that the foods we pair also make a difference? Yes, you read that right.

So when we stumbled upon an Instagram reel on ‘Best Health Tips’ listing some food combinations, claiming them to be “an elixir for the body since they help treat any kind of physical and mental strength issues”, we immediately turned to an expert to know more.

The reel listed the following combinations:

Curd and rice with some salt
Milk and bananas
Desi ghee and roti
Green tea with a squeeze of lemon
Turmeric with a dash of pepper

Let’s decode each combination with help from Jinal Patel, dietician, Zynova Shalby Hospital

Rice and curd

Rice and curd is a common combination in many cuisines, and is generally well-tolerated. “The dish offers a balance of carbohydrates, protein, and probiotics. However, if you have lactose intolerance or any sensitivity to dairy products, you may experience digestive discomfort. In such a case, opt for lactose-free or dairy-free alternatives,” suggested Patel.

Milk and banana

Milk and bananas complement each other and provide a good mix of nutrients. According to Patel, milk contains calcium and protein, while bananas offer potassium, fibre, and various vitamins. “There are no significant harmful effects associated with this combination unless you have a specific allergy or intolerance to either milk or bananas,” said Patel.

Lemon with green tea

The combination of lemon and green tea is refreshing and can be enjoyed together. Green tea is rich in antioxidants, while lemon adds a citrusy flavour and provides vitamin C. “This combination is generally safe and may offer additional benefits as lemon can enhance the absorption of certain antioxidants from green tea,” said Patel.

However, excessive consumption of lemon juice may affect tooth enamel due to its acidic nature, Patel cautioned, adding that it’s advisable to consume lemon juice in moderation and rinse your mouth with water afterward.

Turmeric milk with black pepper

Turmeric milk with black pepper is a popular combination that has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic practices, Patel said. “Turmeric contains curcumin, a compound with potential anti-inflammatory properties, and black pepper helps enhance the absorption of curcumin. This combination is generally safe to consume, but individuals allergic to turmeric or black pepper should avoid it,” Patel said.

It’s also important to note that excessive intake of turmeric may interact with certain medications, so it’s advisable to consult a healthcare professional if you have any concerns.

Patel said it is best to refrain from having roti and ghee alone and to pair it with vegetables for a better combination.
