Is this viral Korean rice flour mask the secret to getting ‘glass skin’?

The internet is abuzz with a new K-beauty secret: a rice flour mask promising “glass skin” — the dewy, poreless complexion Koreans are famous for. Recently, Nriti S, a beauty influencer, shared the recipe for the viral Korean rice flour mask.

“So, I have been trying the viral Korean mask for glass skin for the last two weeks and the results are astounding. You need two tablespoons of rice flour, two tablespoons of yoghurt or raw milk, and one tablespoon of honey. Mix it well and apply it over your face. Leave it on for 10 minutes and wash it off. You can seriously see the difference in just two weeks,” she said.

So, can this simple DIY remedy truly live up to the hype? We reached out to experts to find out.

According to Dr DM Mahajan, senior consultant, dermatology, Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, Delhi, the viral mask made of rice flour, honey and yoghurt has various skin benefits.

“The rice flour works as a natural exfoliator, removing dead skin cells, unclogging pores, and improving skin texture. Yoghurt, on the other hand, includes lactic acid which promotes gentle exfoliation and aids in the removal of hyperpigmentation. Furthermore, honey is a natural humectant, which helps retain moisture in the skin, keeping it hydrated and supple,” he noted.

Additionally, Dr Henna Sharma, consultant dermatology, Yatharth Hospital, Noida Extension said that it is particularly beneficial for oily skin type. “The viral mask effectively reduces oiliness and shine. It also soothes irritation and redness, offering a calming effect. With antimicrobial and lactic acid content, the mask may also contribute to the improvement of acne-prone skin,” she added.

Despite its potential benefits, dermatologists advise caution.

“The exfoliating characteristics of rice flour and the acidic nature of yoghurt might be too harsh for some skin types,” Dr Mahajan said. “A patch test is necessary to avoid skin irritation or allergic reactions, especially for people with sensitive skin.”

Experts also warn that achieving ‘glass skin’ is a holistic approach. “While the face mask can offer certain benefits for healthy skin, particularly hydration, exfoliation and oil control, it is not a substitute for professional dermatological treatments, a consistent skincare routine and proper nutrition,” Dr Sharma explained.
