The afternoon slump is dreaded by many who face it on a regular basis. Even if you start the day full of energy, when it is close to mid-afternoon, a sudden wave of drowsiness and unproductivity suddenly hits you. If only there was a cosy bed nearby to relax!

According to Lovneet Batra, clinical nutritionist and founder of Nutrition by Lovneet, “People often feel drowsy during this time due to various factors such as consuming a high salt and high carb lunch, irregular sleep patterns, excessive screen time before bed, and compromised sleep quality.”

Most of us don’t have the luxury to switch on our siesta mode and complete an afternoon nap. But that does not mean that you will have to power through the sluggish feeling every single day.

Believe it or not, you can fix the issue by making a small change to your diet — incorporating energy-boosting snacks! Batra agrees, “Individuals can opt for snacks that contain a mix of lean protein, fiber, and healthy fats. It’s important to avoid snacks like namkeen, biscuits, soft drinks, and excessive tea or coffee, as these can lead to glucose spikes and subsequent crashes.”

If you want more specific solutions, Batra suggests you try the following five snacks to supercharge your energy in the afternoons:

Sprouts: Sprouts are rich sources of protein and fibre. Protein helps in building and repairing tissues, while fibre aids digestion and promotes feelings of fullness, preventing energy crashes.

Boiled egg: A good source of protein and healthy fats, boiled eggs can help stabilise blood sugar levels and keep energy levels steady.

Fruit with soaked nuts: Combining fruits with nuts provides a mix of carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats, offering a quick energy boost and prolonged satiety.

Boiled chana chaat: Chana (chickpeas) are high in protein and fiber, making them a nutritious and filling snack option to ward off fatigue.

Sattu coconut water mixer: Sattu, a traditional Indian flour made from roasted grams, mixed with coconut water, provides hydration, electrolytes, and sustained energy to combat afternoon fatigue.

Make sure that apart from consuming these snacks that you cut down on you sugar consumption as it can lead to an energy crash when the blood sugar level goes down; get enough sleep to feel energised the next day; drink enough water and stay hydrated to help the overall functioning of the body; as well as exercise regularly to make your cardiovascular system more efficient and as a result remain energetic throughout the day.
