Indian kitchens are almost always stacked with spices — not only to enhance the flavour of foods but also to manage certain ailments like colds and coughs, and even blood pressure, and diabetes. So today, we detail the uses and benefits of one such spice about which Hansaji Yogendra, director, The Yoga Institute, spoke about — sharing what happens to one’s body if consumed daily for 14 days. The spice is none other than fenugreek seeds or methi seeds.

The small, golden seeds as well as the leaves have a heating effect on the body and increase the digestive fire. Methi also has soluble fibre that regulates blood sugar levels by slowing down the absorption of carbohydrates, and sugar. This is very good for people who have diabetes or insulin resistance. “Further, they stimulate digestive enzymes, which helps reduce any discomfort felt due to indigestion or bloating. Additionally, fenugreek helps curb the absorption of cholesterol in the intestines which, in turn, lowers cholesterol levels and reduces the risk of heart disease apart from weight loss management,” said Dr Hansaji on her YouTube channel.

What is the best way to consume them?

*Soak a tablespoon of fenugreek in water overnight.
*Consume it empty stomach the next morning.
*Chew the seeds with water.

So, what happens if you have fenugreek seeds for 14 days?

Sushma PS, chief dietician, Jindal Naturecure Institute shared that due to the many health advantages of fenugreek seeds, consuming them for 14 days can have a variety of effects on the body. “They are rich in fibre, protein, iron, and other vital elements. They have a reputation for helping with digestion, controlling blood sugar, encouraging weight loss, and lowering cholesterol,” said Sushma.

According to Sushma, frequent ingestion of fenugreek seeds over two weeks has the potential to enhance digestion and alleviate digestive problems, including but not limited to bloating, indigestion, and constipation. “Fenugreek seeds’ high fibre content can support gut health by regulating bowel motions,” said Sushma.

Moreover, fenugreek seeds may help lower blood sugar levels because they are thought to have “hypoglycemic qualities”. This can be especially helpful for people who already have diabetes or are at risk of getting it, added Sushma.

Consuming fenugreek seeds consistently for two weeks may therefore contribute to improved lipid profiles and cardiovascular health, stressed Sangeeta Tiwari, Artemis Lite, NFC, New Delhi. “Additionally, fenugreek seeds have been shown to suppress appetite and promote feelings of fullness, which can help in weight management. Over 14 days, incorporating fenugreek seeds into your diet may help in controlling cravings and support weight loss efforts,” said Tiwari.

They also have compounds with anti-inflammatory properties, which can help in “reducing inflammation in the body”. “Regular consumption of fenugreek seeds over two weeks may alleviate symptoms of inflammatory conditions like arthritis and asthma,” said Tiwari.

Furthermore, it is generally recognised that fenugreek seeds may contain antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that improve general health and well-being.

However, it’s crucial to remember that reactions to fenugreek seeds might differ from person to person. Some people may have negative side effects like diarrhea or allergic reactions if they consume too much of the seeds. Tiwari said, “These side effects include diarrhea, nausea, and other digestive tract symptoms and rarely, dizziness and headaches. Furthermore, these seeds might also trigger allergic reactions in some people.”

So, like with any dietary adjustment, it’s best to speak with a medical expert, particularly if you have any pre-existing medical issues or concerns,” said Sushma.
