Do amla, bhringraj, and hibiscus make for a ‘dream team for hair care’?

A hair spa is not only a relaxing treatment for your hair but also a revitalising and nourishing one. But to some, it may seem like an expensive treatment (depending on the frequency and quality of products used). So, if you are looking for an alternative, beauty blogger Bhawana Mehra recently shared the recipe for a hair mask, which she said can take care of your hair spa needs right at home. “I’ve been on a mission to find something natural and effective for my hair, something I can prepare by myself; and I stumbled upon amla, bhringraj, and hibiscus powders to make life a little easier!” she wrote on Instagram.

According to Mehra, the trio makes for a “dream team for hair care”. “Amla’s got vitamin C, which is great for hair growth. Bhringraj is like the king of Ayurvedic herbs for hair, and hibiscus is all about making your hair strong and shiny,” Mehra added.

How to make the mask?

Ingredients

1 spoon – Amla powder
1 spoon – Bhringraj
1 spoon – Hibiscus powders
Soaked fenugreek seeds water
Curd stored in copperware for 2-3 days

Method

*Mix equal parts of the powders with some water. Add curd or fenugreek water to the mix.

“I will advise using fermented fenugreek water or curd stored in copperware for 2-3 days for a mini spa treatment at home,” said Mehra.

“The best part? It works. My hair feels stronger and looks shinier!” said Mehra.

Combining natural ingredients like amla (Indian gooseberry), hibiscus, bhringraj (false daisy), and fenugreek for hair care has roots in traditional Ayurvedic practices. Each of these ingredients is believed to offer various benefits for hair health, such as promoting hair growth, preventing dandruff, strengthening hair follicles, and adding shine. However, experts suggest that their effectiveness may vary from person to person and might not be scientifically proven in all cases.

Amla is rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, which can help strengthen hair follicles, stimulate hair growth, and prevent premature graying. “Hibiscus is known for its conditioning properties, promoting hair growth, and preventing hair fall. Bhringraj is often used to prevent hair loss, and premature graying, and improve overall hair health,” said Dr Rinky Kapoor, consultant dermatologist, cosmetic dermatologist, and dermato-surgeon, The Esthetic Clinics.

Bhringraj, also known as eclipta alba, is a well-known ayurvedic herb which helps to increase blood circulation to the scalp and promotes healthy hair, shared Dr Shareefa Chause, dermatologist and cosmetologist, Shareefa’s Skin Care Clinic.

Fenugreek seeds are rich in proteins and nicotinic acid, which are believed to stimulate hair growth, strengthen hair follicles, and prevent dandruff,” said Dr Kapoor.

Mixing these ingredients can create a potent hair mask or oil blend which can be applied to the scalp and hair. However, according to Dr Kapoor, the addition of copperware set curd may not necessarily enhance the benefits. “While copper is essential for overall health and may have some antimicrobial properties, its role in hair care is not well-established. Similarly, curd is often used for its conditioning properties, but its effectiveness in combination with these specific ingredients for hair health is not extensively studied,” said Dr Kapoor.

Dr Chause said that for some people, the mixture can create dryness post-hair wash. “In such a situation, especially when your hair is frizzy, you need to apply conditioner,” she said.
