Prithviraj Sukumaran’s dedication to his role in Aadujeevitham pushed his physical limits. The actor underwent a dramatic transformation, losing 31 kilograms to portray a character struggling to survive.

Cinematographer Sunil KS revealed the intensity of Prithviraj’s commitment, particularly for a challenging nude scene. In an interview, KS described, “For the naked scene, Prithviraj was fasting for three days, not even water on the last day; before the shoot, he took 30ML vodka to drain the remaining water from the body. He was carried in a chair to the location. We needed to lift him from the chair before the shot.” His quote was translated by Christopher Kanagaraj, who shared it on X.

Previously, Prithviraj had also opened up about fasting for up to 72 hours to embody the emaciated character enduring harsh desert conditions.

The actor said the physical transformation was achieved under the expert guidance of trainers, nutritionists and doctors on set. “All of them jointly agreed upon the fact that there is no healthy way to do this. My whole transformation was primarily based on fasting. There were times when the fast used to be up to 72 hours long. In fact, the most dramatic part of the transformation… I don’t think you have seen any of the footage. That shock value we have reserved for one scene in the film when you finally get to see his body after the three years he has spent in the desert,” he had revealed in an interview with Galatta India.

Dr Vidhe Sharma, consulting physician, Ruby Hall Clinic, Hinjewadi, Pune, agreed with the actor’s physicians explaining that while there may be short-term benefits such as weight loss and ketosis, prolonged fasting can create problems such as weakness, dizziness, electrolyte imbalances, and potential health risks if not done with proper hydration and nutrient intake.

Various physiological changes in the body occur if you’ve been fasting for 3 days consecutively. According to Dr Sharma, these include initial symptoms such as hunger, fatigue, and irritability. As the body adapts, it starts using stored glycogen for energy, followed by fat breakdown, resulting in weight loss and ketosis.

“It’s crucial to consult with a doctor before attempting extended fasts. The best way and duration to fast vary depending on individual health conditions and goals. Shorter fasts or intermittent fasting regimens may be more suitable for some individuals, while others may benefit from longer fasts under medical supervision,” Dr Sharma said in an interaction with indianexpress.com.
