Hair thinning can be a frustrating experience for men and women alike, caused by a variety of factors, including genetics, stress, hormonal changes, and certain medical conditions. While there are medications and treatments available, some individuals prefer to explore natural remedies first. As such, nutritionist Apurwa Agarwal shared “5 natural remedies to cure hair thinning”. Let’s have a look.

  1. Hair massage

According to Agarwal, a scalp massage helps increase hair thickness, as the “mechanical stimulation of cells and improvement in the blood flow increases the thickness of hair”.

Concurring, Dr DM Mahajan, senior consultant dermatologist at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, explained that massaging the scalp improves blood circulation to the hair follicles, delivering essential nutrients and oxygen for hair growth. Additionally, he mentioned that a hair massage can reduce stress, which is a common factor contributing to hair thinning.

  1. Amla

Agarwal suggests using the dry fruit powder of amla for shampooing hair or as a hair tonic.

Explaining the reasoning behind this, Dr Mahajan said that amla is rich in vitamin C and antioxidants. “These nutrients help strengthen hair follicles. Amla also has anti-inflammatory properties that can soothe the scalp and prevent dandruff, which leads to hair thinning,” he added.

  1. Shikakai

Using the dry powder of pods of shikakai, said Agarwal, can promote hair growth and prevent hair-splitting. “It is used for the healthy growth of hair and to keep hair in its original colour.”

Agreeing, Dr Mahajan noted that shikakai is a natural herb that has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine for hair care. “It contains vitamins, antioxidants, and other nutrients that nourish the scalp and hair follicles, promoting healthy hair growth. Shikakai also has cleansing properties that help remove dirt and excess oil from the scalp, preventing clogged pores,” he said.

  1. Rosemary

Agarwal recommends rosemary to stimulate hair growth. “The topical application of rosemary stimulates hair follicles. In addition, aromatherapy with rosemary oil is beneficial in promoting hair growth.”

Dr Mahajan added that rosemary has antimicrobial properties that can help maintain a healthy scalp and prevent conditions like dandruff. “Rosemary oil has also been shown to inhibit the production of DHT — a hormone linked to hair loss.”

  1. Onion

Onion juice has hair growth-promoting activity,” said Agarwal, adding that it contains minerals like iron and zinc.

Additionally, Dr Mahajan noted that onion contains sulfur, which is essential in the production of collagen — a protein that strengthens hair follicles. Onion juice might also increase blood flow to the scalp, stimulating hair growth.
