Review: Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman together on the big screen in May December

Post At: Feb 17/2024 04:20PM

More Oscar-worthy movies are landing in Kiwi cinemas this weekend and among them is one starring two Oscar-winning women, Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman.

Critically acclaimed and Oscar-nominated for Best Original Screenplay, Todd Haynes' film May December is a dish best on the big screen.

Based loosely on a real-life tabloid story, the brilliant Julianne Moore is Gracie, a wife and mother married to a man 23 years her junior.

Joe was just 13 years old when they met, she was jailed and gave birth to their first child behind bars.

Twenty years later, with three children, a film is being made about their lives and Natalie Portman's Elizabeth knocks on their door.

It's a story that explores uncomfortable themes with a canny eye and is supported by such rich performances.

Gracie and Joe's lives may not bear the weight of unexpected scrutiny, and it makes for a quietly gripping few hours in the cinema.

Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman together on the big screen should never be missed, and while you're at it bear witness to the breakout of a new star in Charles Melton.

Engrossing, prickly and thought-provoking - May December is a four-star watch.
