Platoon director Oliver Stone says Ryan Gosling is "wasting his time" making movies like Barbie, when "he should be doing more serious films".

Stone made the comments during an interview about the state of the film industry with UK website City AM.

"Ridiculous. Ryan Gosling is wasting his time if he's doing that shit for money. He should be doing more serious films," Stone said.

"He shouldn't be a part of this infantilisation of Hollywood. Now it's all fantasy, fantasy, fantasy, including all the war pictures: fantasy, fantasy."

Gosling has been widely praised for his performance as Ken in Greta Gerwig's movie, and his song 'I'm Just Ken' won a Critics Choice Award last week.

In April last year, just before the film's release, Gosling admitted to a Cinema Con crowd in London that he was not sure about the role initially.

"Up until this point, I only knew Ken from afar. I didn't know Ken from within," he said at the time.

"I doubted my Ken-ergy. I didn't see it," he said, later adding that his co-star Margot Robbie and director Greta Gerwig ultimately "conjured" the Ken doll out of him.

Stone also launched salvos at other blockbuster movie franchises.

"Even the Fast and Furious movies, which I used to enjoy, have become like Marvel movies. I mean, how many crashes can you see?" he said.

"On the plane I watched John Wick, which is three hours and some. And I fell asleep about 778 times during it. I kept waking up and having to face him killing more people.

"It's like the world has degenerated into non-logic."
