Mike McRoberts, Samantha Hayes and the Newshub team have bid a teary farewell to viewers as its final 6pm broadcast went to air.

"Thank you for being our people, we've absolutely loved being yours," were the final words spoken by McRoberts as the programme, and his career in broadcasting came to an end.

Holding hands with McRoberts, Hayes paid tribute to the viewers and the team behind the scenes.

"We have all loved making the news - thank you for watching, and for having us in your homes," she said.

"There is a huge team of people behind the scenes that work to make this happen and I know we'll stay friends long after today."

The end of Newshub Live at 6pm marks the end of the Newshub news service, which began as 3 National News in 1989.

Before the final remarks Newshub aired a story showing highlights from the network's news coverage over the years, which ended with pictures of its staff set, cheekily set to Fleetwood Mac's song 'Second Hand News'.

Earlier in the broadcast Sports presenters Andrew Gourdie and Nicky Styris thanked sports fans for their loyalty over the years.

"We have had so much fun and it's a day to celebrate, it's also a day to be sad," Styris said.

"It's been an absolute honour and privilege to share the sports news with you over this decade and bring the stories to the people out there."

"Thank you so much for everything you've done, thank you all for watching," added Gourdie.

Gourdie and Styris and weather presenter Heather Keats stood behind McRoberts and Hayes as he delivered the final words.

"So we've come to the end, and to finish I'd like to quote that beautiful whakataukī or Māori proverb.

"He aha te mea nui o te ao? What is the most important thing in the world?

"He tangata, he tangata, he tangata.

"It is people, it is people, it is people," said McRoberts.

While Newshub is ending, Hayes will front a new 6pm news programme ThreeNews, which Stuff will produce for Three.

Keats will also join ThreeNews as weather presenter. McRoberts has announced a move to join the NBR.

Newshub's closure comes as parent company Warner Bros. Discovery executes a major restructure of its New Zealand business.
