Christchurch's Court Theatre sells old props ahead of location move

After more than a decade, Christchurch's Court Theatre is finally preparing to move out of its temporary building and into its new home.

But before that can happen it needs to sell off a bunch of old props - and what better way to do it than an old-fashioned garage sale.

Wigs, weapons, and a life-size rocking horse are just a few of the eclectic items up for grabs.

"It's things that have been in the theatre for the last 40 years or so that we just kind of pulled out of the woodwork as it were. So it's all this stuff that we just never even knew we had," Court Theatre production manager Alex Wilson told Newshub.

So they decided to sell some of it off. The money raised will help cover the costs of moving into their brand-new purpose-built facility.

"The new building's amazing, it's a state-of-the-art facility. It has two fully-functioning theatres, a bigger theatre and a smaller theatre, several bars and dining options within. It's going to be an amazing facility," Wilson said.

The country's largest theatre company has been operating out of a temporary space since the Christchurch earthquakes.

"It's kind of falling apart, it really wasn't envisioned to be lived in for this long," Wilson said.

Wilson said with any luck they'll be out by the end of the year.

As for all the costumes, electronics and items of furniture, they now have a new home too.

"We're really glad that these things which have been so loved by the theatre and going to homes where they'll be loved for future generations," Wilson said.

No matter how wacky or wonderful they might be.
