A former royal chef claims the King's favourite Christmas meal is "actually boring", saying the royal family tends to stick to the traditions for the big day.

Darren McGrady, who cooked for Queen Elizabeth and Princess Diana, told OK Magazine they had to prepare the same meal every year for the group.

"They're actually boring when it comes to festivities. They didn't do hams or anything, just traditional turkeys.

"We did three turkeys for the Queen and her family in the royal dining room, one for the children's nursery and then more for the 100 or so staff, so everyone had a Christmas lunch."

It's not the first time McGrady has spilled the royal tea over the dining habits of the family.

In July this year, he said the Queen was partial to chocolate biscuit cake, telling Harper's Bazaar the crunchy chocolate treat was a staple at her afternoon teas.

"She'll take a small slice every day until eventually there is only one tiny piece, but you have to send that up - she wants to finish the whole of that cake," he said.

He also revealed that Harry and William had a penchant for pizza when they were younger.

Although the Italian dish was never a favourite of the Queen's, McGrady told media the siblings "would have had it every night if Nanny let them".
