Met Gala 2024: The best red carpet looks from the biggest night in fashion

It's the first Monday in May (in the US, anyway), which means the Met Gala - hailed as the biggest night in the fashion calendar - is currently underway at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

The exclusive, invitation-only gala - an annual fundraiser for the museum's Costume Institute - sees the who's who of the fashion and entertainment industries congregate for a night of haute couture, their glamorous garb guided by a specific theme each year that references the museum's latest exhibition.

This year, the theme for the red carpet is 'The Garden of Time', a reference to the 1962 short sci-fi story of the same name by British author J.G. Ballard. Like the story - which takes place in a garden of time-bending florals - the museum's latest exhibition, 'Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion', highlights the connections between nature and technology.

It was revealed late last year that the exhibition will utilise tools such as AI, CGI, video animation, light projection and sound-scaping to breathe new life into roughly 250 archival pieces of historical significance, each of which have been drawn from the Costume Institute's permanent collection. The theme is chosen each year by Andrew Bolton, curator-in-charge at the Costume Institute.

Reports ahead of the gala speculated the red carpet will be awash with fantastical florals, sci-fi references, and archival looks with a fresh twist in honour of the theme.

Early arrivals included Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny and Chris Hemsworth - all of whom are this year's co-chairs - as well as Game of Thrones' Gwendoline Christie, influencer Emma Chamberlain, Lea Michele, and Dune: Part 2 actress Rebecca Ferguson.

Zendaya, Lopez, Bad Bunny and Hemsworth are sharing hosting duties with Vogue editor-in-chief and Costume Institute trustee Anna Wintour, who has served as the gala's co-chair since 1995. TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew and Jonathan Anderson, creative director of the fashion label Loewe, are honorary chairs.

According to Vogue, the gown features 2,800,000 micro bugle beads and took 5000 hours to embroider.
