Sports presenter Andrew Gourdie says he will end his 6pm news career when Newshub closes down on Friday, July 5.

He posted a statement on his Instagram, saying it was "time for a change".

In April, Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed it would shut down its New Zealand news operations and the final Newshub Live at 6pm bulletin will be broadcast on July 5.

"I arrived at 3news in October 2005 as a 21 year old former national air guitar finalist with a passion for sport, ready to get stuck into my dream job," Gourdie said.

"For nearly 20 years, I've been incredibly fortunate to work with some of the best journalists in New Zealand as part of an amazing news team. It's time for a change.

"When the final Newshub bulletin airs on July 5th, I'll be stepping away from 6pm news."

Gourdie said it had been an "enormous privilege" to do the job for nearly 20 years.

"I'm extremely grateful for the opportunities and experiences this job has afforded me. It has been an enormous privilege to be welcomed into living rooms around the country to tell the stories kiwis care about.

"I want to say a massive thank you to all of my colleagues, past and present. It has been an absolute honour to work alongside each and every one of you. Thank you for supporting me, encouraging me, and believing in me. Friendships made in the Flower Street newsroom will last a lifetime.

"Righto that's enough. Thanks mates."

Fellow Newshub Live at 6 presenter Samantha Hayes paid tribute to him in the comments, saying: "You are sensational Gourdie and always will be. A brilliant sports journo and presenter - a joy to share a studio with. I count myself lucky to have worked alongside you."

Patrick Gower also commented on the post, telling him: "One of the absolute best to ever do it. Proud to be your colleague but it has been ever better to become friends and have so many laughs. Love you Gourdie!"

Gourdie's departure follows the news Mike McRoberts will also be stepping away from presenting news when Newshub closes down.

In April, he announced his "journey as a news presenter" would end on July 5.

By the final bulletin, McRoberts will have been working at Newshub, formerly 3 News, for more than 23 years.
